Brett Ungar captured the Mat Town Open II Title on Saturday in Pennsylvania after winning four consecutive matches at 125 pounds and outscoring his opponents by a combined 19-3.
He began with a victory over Patrick Adams of Buffalo before majoring Aiden Lewis of Bucknell in the quarters. That brought him to the mat against familiar foe Gary Steen of Penn State and Ungar topped him again, this time by a 2-1 tally. In the finals, Ungar bested Pennsylvania RTC's Sean Seefeldt to nab the championship.
Ungar was joined on the podium by three Spartan teammates who took third place - Ethan Fernandez (133), Vince Cornella (141), and Christian Hansen (174).
Fernandez bounced back strong after losing his opening bout on Saturday. He first pinned Penn State's Marco Vespa and followed up with a 10-0 major over Maryland's Conner Quinn. Next up was highly touted Julian Chlebove of Arizona State and Fernandez beat him 6-3. The winning streak hit five as Fernandez came out on top versus Kelly Dunnigan of Penn and Caleb Svingala of Buffalo before a forfeit in his final contest.
Cornella racked up six wins during the tournament, including four bonus point victories. After beginning with a 10-3 decision, he majored Andrew Gapas of Rutgers, 14-0, before dropping a 3-1 decision. He then beat Navy's Anthony Sciotto 9-4, pinned Lock Haven's Tyler Dilley, accepted a medical forfeit and then recorded another first period fall in the third place match against West Virginia's Davin Rhoads.
Hansen went 4-1 on the day to nab bronze at 174. He prevailed over Buffalo starter Jake Lanning in his first match and then majored Anthony Cicciarelli of West Virginia. He lost to the eventual runner up in his next bout, but registered a pin and then a 7-2 decision in the third place contest against Tucker Nadeau of the Mountaineers.
Nate Wade collected three victories for Spartan - two majors and a fall at 149 pounds, while Dillon Williams won a pair, including a major, at 165.
Evan Canoyer competed for Spartan at 174 pounds at the event, while both Vince Napolitana and Myles Griffin took the mat at 141.
