Vince Cornella has been racking up 65 kg titles at the U20 level this spring and summer. He captured the US Open crown in Las Vegas and followed by taking the World Team Trials best-of-three finals series to secure his spot on Team USA for the upcoming World Championships.
On Sunday, the incoming Cornell freshman added another gold medal to his collection with a dominant showing at the U20 Pan American Championships in Mexico.
Cornella began his day with a 10-0 quarterfinal blanking of Peru's Jose Benites Vasquez.
In the semis, Cornella again prevailed in the first period, with another 10-0 technical fall, this time over Dom Juan Martins Ferreira of Brazil.
That led to a finals meeting with Mexico's Erick Barroso Bautista. Cornella attacked from the start, taking a quick 4-0 lead before ending the bout with a fall.
Next on Cornella's competition schedule is the U20 World Championships in mid-August in Bulgaria.
Congratulations, Vince!
