In his second tournament of the season, Vince Cornella picked up the 141 pound championship at the Mat Town Open in Pennsylvania.
Cornella won 5-2 over Evan Buchanan of Virginia in his opener and then recorded falls in the next two bouts - over Tyler Dilley of Lock Haven and Aaron Coleman of Bloomsburg. In the title match, Cornella topped Cornell's Joshua Saunders, 4-2, to grab first place.
For the third consecutive weekend, Brett Ungar nabbed third place at 125 pounds with several dominant victories. He racked up big points, with three 15-0 technical falls, as well as a 9-1 major. His only loss was a 3-1 decision in the semifinals.
After placing the past two weekends at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open and the Shorty Hitchcock at 149, Nate Wade started with a first period fall at Mat Town. He then dropped a decision to UVA starter Jarod Verkleeren before starting a new winning streak. He registered a 10-2 major against Bloomsburg's Vincent Miceli, pinned Tyler Martin of Binghamton and then earned two-point wins over Connor Eck of Lock Haven and Brayden Roberts of West Virginia to notch third.
After his runner up finish at the Shorty Hitchcock Open at 174 pounds, Christian Hansen made quick work in his initial match on Sunday, pinning Billy Brown in two minutes. He followed with a 13-7 decision over Krystian Kinsey of Virginia before he was edged 6-5 by the eventual champion from Virginia, Justin Phillips. Hansen then bounced back with a 4-2 decision over Spartan teammate Evan Canoyer before falling in the bronze bout to finish fourth.
Canoyer's first bout of the morning was a 2-0 loss to the previously mentioned champ (Phillips), however, he responded with three straight victories - over foes from Virginia, Navy and Bucknell - before his meeting with Hansen.
Brody Oleksak began his day with an 11-5 triumph over Miles Bassett of Bucknell before losing to Virginia starter Justin McCoy and medical forfeiting out.
At 141, Myles Griffin picked up a pair of victories, earning an 8-0 major over Tal-Reese Flemming of Bloomsburg and a 9-3 decision against David Kreidler of Navy.
Also at 141, Vincenzo Napolitana opened with a 6-4 win over an opponent from Bloomsburg, before medical forfeiting out of the event.
Ishan Shah (125) and Liam Schibi (141) also competed for Spartan Combat at Lock Haven.
