Two college tournaments. Two college championships.
That's what high school senior and Spartan Combat RTC wrestler Meyer Shapiro has done in the past few weeks. After taking the Clarion Open title, he added on the Bearcat Open championship on Sunday in Binghamton.
Shapiro won all five of his matches at 149 pounds, with two major decisions and a 24 second pin. One of those bonus point wins was in the final, in which he topped Penn State's Connor Pierce, 14-3.
Also placing for Spartan was Brendan Furman, who was fifth at 285 pounds. The heavyweight went 4-1, including a fall and a 13-0 major decision. It's the second straight placement for Furman after he notched third at the Clarion Open last week.
After dropping his opener, George Oroudjov won three straight, including a pair of 7-0 decisions, to just miss the podium at 133 pounds.
Benny Rogers had a technical fall at 157 in his first match, while Ethan Qureshi (133) and Vincenzo Napolitano (149) both won their initial bouts by major. Foster Cardinale also picked up bonus points with a pin at 125 pounds. Mark Botello (141), Kaleb Williams (157), Liam Finn (165), Roberto Padilla (165), and Ashton Davis (285) all got their hand raised.
Also taking the mat for Spartan were Ben Shvartsman (165), Aiden Hanning (184), and Andy Rosa (197).
